El Nido is the destination on everyones itinerary when visiting Palawan and therefore can get quite crowded in certain areas. However with some local knowledge you can escape the crowds and find your own spot of this iconic destination.
Why is El Nido called El Nido?
The main town of El Nido is located on the west coast of the mainland facing the Bacuit Bay. These are the limestone karst rock formations that give El Nido its name. Small swiftlet birds lay their eggs in a nest made from their own saliva stuck on the side of the caves. These nests are treasured by the Chinese for birds nest soup, so locals have been harvesting these small rubber like delicacies since Spanish times, hence the name El Nido, ‘The Nest’ in Spanish.
How to Get to El Nido
EL Nido Airport is privately owned serviced by just one airline Airswift. They fly from Busuanga, Caticlan, Cebu, Clark, Manila, Tagbilaran.
Flights get booked up during high season and holidays so we suggest to book in advance.
Puerto Princessa is located 4 hours south of El Nido, and serviced by multiple budget airlines such as Air Asia, Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines. Check sky scanner for options.
Another option is San Vincente, located 2 hours by road south of El Nido. During peak season this is an option if the flights direct to El Nido are fully booked. Check Sunlight Air.
Where to Stay in EL NIDO TOWN and Coron Corong
El Nido town is split into two parts, the Town Proper and Corong Corong.
The Town Proper has the port to where all boat traffic departs from as well as many restaurants, bars and places to stay. Corong Corong is a short 10 min trycycle ride away. It is the stretch of coast that faces the stunning sunset across the Bacuit Bay. There are many places to stay and cool sunset bars and places to eat. Also the Tao El Nido Office is located here so it’s close to your departure point for the expedition.
El Nido Accommodation Recommendations
We recommend that you book a place to stay close to the Tao Office in Corong Coron or El Nido town for the night before your departure as you will be required to attend the group briefing and depart early from here the next day.
If you are arriving in El Nido after a Tao trip then you can book accommodations further away from Town, such as Lio Beach.

WHAT TO DO IN EL NIDO
ISLAND HOPPING ON TOUR A, B & C IN THE BACUIT BAY
The Islands in El Nido’s Bacuit bay offer plenty of island hopping, diving and exploring activities. Some of these destinations include, Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon, Secret Beach etc.
Many guests ask whether we will visit these places on the Tao Expeditions. We specialize in avoiding the tourist crowds, and take you to remote island destinations in between El Nido and Coron out of reach of the regular island hopping boats. So if you have few days available on either side of the Tao trip, we recommend that you see these places in smaller island hopping boats available for hire in town. However during high season the islands can get very crowded so keep reading to see what to do in El Nido other than tour A, B and C.
What to do in El Nido other than Tour ABC
El Nido is famous for its island hopping in the Bacuit bay. However during high season the destinations can get very crowded with so many boats, packed with hundreds of day trippers.
1. Kayak or island hop to Cadlao Island
To avoid the crowds we suggest to rent a private boat and island hop around Cadlao Island.[sometimes called Tour D], It’s surrounded by many beautiful beaches and Cadlao Lagoon. This is the island you can see from El Nido Town so it’s not far. We suggest to have a relaxing morning and leave late, the dispatch for the island hopping boats from town can take up to 2 hours, so to avoid this just book a half day tour.
You can also Kayak here from town. Artcafe have kayaks for rent. From Town Kayak North, be careful to cross the channel over to Cadlao, there may be lots of passing boats and the wind can get strong blowing between the cliffs. When you are on the other side, head left [clockwise] and enjoy the quiet beaches until you get to Cadlao Lagoon. If you are feeling adventurous then keep going to the next beach, but for most people that’s enough and time to start heading back. Wear sun protection and take a pack lunch and plenty of water to stay hydrated.
2. Rent a Motorbike to Nacpan, waterfalls
Rent a motorbike and head north of El Nido Town to Lio Beach Resort Development where the Airport is located. There are shops, restaurants and a public beach. But if you are exploring the coast by motorbike, then we suggest visiting here for the amazing sunset at the end of the day, where you will be closer to town so you are not driving too far in the dark.
BULALACAO WATERFALLS
Continue along the road and pass through Lamao where you will see the little fish market, the road curves to the right and you will see a bridge on the left. Go straight ahead to the signs for Bulalacao Waterfalls. Turn left upon the newly cemented road where you will park your bike. There is a 25 min trek through the forest before you reach the falls for a refreshing swim.
NACPAN BEACH
Nacpan beach is, the longest beach in El Nido. Certain times of year you can rent a board and surf here but be careful of rip tides during strong weather. There are usually notices to tell you if it’s safe to swim in the water or not. There are a few places to get a drink and a snacks.
3. Surf in Duli and Dagmay
DULI BEACH
If Nacpan is too touristy for you then head north still to Duli beach. It’s an undeveloped surfers hang out and one of the coolest vibes in El Nido. Be warned that parts of the road gets rough and can be quite tricky if it’s been raining.
BUCANA VILLAGE
Before the turning to Duli Beach, continue along the road to the village of Bucana. It’s a beautiful fishing village in a sheltered river estuary with a hanging bridge to pass to the other side. Get some snacks here and continue on to Duli Beach.
Depending on how long you spend soaking up the vibes in Duli It may be time to head back to El Nido [via the waterfalls for a fresh water rinse , or to Lio Beach for sunset]
Or continue north along the coast visiting the super remote beaches of Dagmay and XXX
Just remember to leave enough time to get back before dark.
4. Dive Sibaltan with Manta Ray Cleaning Station
SIBALTAN
One of the best dive recommendations outside of the Coron area is a day out with Dive Sibaltan. They opened up a dive shop in 2017 to explore the remote reefs on the East side of the island. Soon after they firing a Manta Ray cleaning station and some healthy coral reefs in the area. The crew running Dive Sibaltan are good friends of Tao. You can arrange transport to and from El Nido or stay with them in their beach accommodation in Sibaltan.
5. Daracoton Bay with Tao
DARACOTON BAY
If you are not already booked on a Tao trip then you can get a taste of Tao for a day and drive up to San Fernando in Daracouton Bay. Visit the Tao farm for the day on a Day pass and have lunch at Kantina and Cocktails in the beach Club, get a boat over to Daracouton, the jewel of the Bay. Appointment by Reservation only, we do not accept walk-ins.
